Tectonic Plates

 Kia ora,

Last week we did an experiment to learn about plate tectonics and how the movement of the plates help shape New Zealand. I learned about a Pacific plate. Here are some photos from my experiment. Can you guess what we used for our experiment. 

Science 1:Me and my DNA

This term for science we are learning all about how the human body works and how special we all are. We are also trying to learn how to think and act more like a scientist. So, Miss Fletcher asked us to look at our faces in the mirror and write down notes about what we look like. The information had to be precise and clear so that when someone read it, it would help them find the person it described quickly. It was a bit like being a detective. You had to look and notice things carefully.

Miss Fletcher said that what we look like depends on our mother and father. Making a new human is a bit like making a cake.  You get some ingredients from your mum and some from your dad. The ingredients are called DNA. Everybody’s cake is different to everyone else’s. 

Miss Fletcher said the person with the most efficient description was Andrew J as he wrote: My hair is 1cm long all over. He is the only student in Team Moana with a haircut like that so he was able to be identified very easily. You can read my description below. The sentences highlighted in blue are the ones that Miss Fletcher said were not precise and clear enough.  Eight people said they could recognise me from my description.

Science Fair

Yesterday we had our school

 science fair. My 

science investigation was about Hovercrafts.

B E G I N N I N G	TITLE	Balloon Hovercraft
	QUESTION	How does a hovercraft hover?
	HYPOTHESIS	I predict that It will fly up.

M I D D L E	EQUIPMENT  AND MATERIALS:	Balloon Bottle cap  Disc  Hot glue gun
	PROCEDURE:	Step 1: Using a hot glue gun, glue the bottle cap over the CD hole. Step 2: Blow up a balloon. When it is fully inflated twist the end so no air comes out. Step 3: Stretch the balloon end over the bottle lid. Step 4: Open up the cap and place the CD on the table. Step 5: Untwist balloon & let go.
	OBSERVATIONS/RESULTS:	I found out that it hover all around the table and it left a track of air.

CONCLUSION:

The air from the balloon creates a cushion of moving air between the disc and the CD and reduces the friction across the surface.

         

Bridge Building

We have been learning about forces and how they help shape the sort of bridges that we build.  

We learned that there are three main types of bridge design; beam, truss and suspension.  Using this knowledge we designed and built our own bridges.

Miss Fletcher set the challenge that our bridges had to be 30 cm long and strong enough to hold an object a track

In my group there were (name who was in your  Mikayla, Ella and Olivia .  We used egg cartons, ice block sticks, a box and hot glue  to build our bridge.

Here is a photo of our truss bridge.  What I like best about our bridge is the triangles.

Moon Rover Lander

For science we made a Moon rover lander using only a paper cup, paper, cellotape and straws.  We were given the task of making our Moon rover land softly onto our Moon landscape so that our marshmallow astronauts did not fly out.

The materials I used for my Moon rover is Paper cup, Paper, Cellotape, Glue.

What I like best about my Moon rover is the springs I put on the bottom.

What I needed to modify on my Moon lander rover was nothing  because my Moon rover landed successfully the first time.

One thing I learned about landing on the Moon was that if I went to the moon I would not be able to breathe so I would

have a breathing suit.

Bug hotel

Today we made a bug hotel we used bamboo, string, sticks, flowers and leaves.
I made a sign for our bug hotel so people don't touch the bug hotel.
We made the bug hotel because it is warm in winter for the good bugs that help our garden.

Explanation Writing

We have planted some beans for science for our experiment. We wrote an explanation of how to grow a bean. Here is my published slide.
